What to Do When Your Phone Won’t Charge

Start with safe, simple checks before asking about a charging repair.

A phone that will not charge does not always need a new battery. Try these simple checks first.

Check the power source

Try another working outlet and a compatible charger. Check the cable for wear or damage. Do not use a damaged cable.

Look at the charging port

Check for visible lint or damage. Avoid pushing metal tools into the port or adding liquids.

Restart the phone

If the phone still has some power, restart it and try charging again. A temporary software issue can sometimes affect charging.

Know when to stop

If the phone is wet, very hot, swollen, or smells unusual, stop charging it and ask a repair professional for help.
