What to Check Before Buying a Used Phone

A simple checklist for screen condition, battery health, storage, locks, and more.

A used phone can be a good fit when you know what to check. Take a few minutes to look beyond the outside of the device.

Check the screen and body

Look for cracks, dark spots, bright spots, dents, and loose buttons. Open a few apps and try the touchscreen across the whole display.

Ask about battery health

Battery life changes with age and use. Ask about the battery condition and whether it has been replaced. Check battery information in the phone settings when available.

Test the basics

Try the cameras, speakers, microphone, Wi-Fi, charging port, and buttons. If you can, place a test call and check that the phone charges.

Check locks and network support

Make sure the previous owner has removed their account and device lock. Ask whether the phone works with your carrier before buying.

Confirm the details

Check the model, storage size, condition, and price. Ask what is included with the phone and whether any store return terms apply.
